Big Dog, located in Brick (NJ), a purveyor of raw dehydrated dog food, has recalled its Chicken Supreme meals due to potential Salmonella contamination. The company also recalled its Fish Supreme meals due to potential Lysteria monocytogenes contamination.
Here’s the Food and Drug Administration‘s press release (“FDA”). There is no information published on the company’s website.
The company became aware of a potential issue after receiving notification from the FDA that an investigational sample of Chicken Supreme tested positive for Salmonella and an investigational sample of Fish Supreme for Listeria monocytogenes.
If we get infected with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, we may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some of us will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If we are Infected but are otherwise healthy, we can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If we have been fed the recalled product and have these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
You should stop feeding the affected product and monitor our health. If you have purchased either of these products, you can obtain a full refund or exchange by returning the product in its original packaging. However, be aware, that if we get sick and you have returned the product, you will not be able to test it for contamination. Best to keep a sample in a ZIP Lock bag, or some other such container. Label it properly, writing down the name of the meal, the date of purchase, and the UPC. Take a picture of the product as well. Such information will be important if legal action needs to be taken as the company may also not perform such tests.
